C+O Book Club: Every month we read a book to improve ourselves.
Here we condense our thoughts and do a brief review on it so you can see how great it is and pick it up for yourself!
For our February read we chose Michael Port’s book, Steal the Show.
Steal the show is a book designed to help you with speechwriting and public speaking. Two skills that I would say most people lack. The book is a very easy read with great summaries at the end of each chapter. Michael delves into a mix of abstract ideas as well as very tangible concepts that can immediately help you.
We first got introduced to Michael through his book, Book Yourself Solid. It has a “sales-y” kind of name, but the content is a total 180 from the typical cheesy business book content and has some amazing info to help you start your business and/or get the best clients. It’s great, you should check it out after you read Steal The Show!
Here are a few of our favourite quotes and ideas from the book. This is definitely a “just buy it!” book in our opinion as it’s already become an invaluable reference we’ll use to creative performances time and time again. It’s just that good! Many of the concepts we couldn’t possibly do justice with a quote. Enjoy!
“You don’t have to be different to make a difference.”
“Which is more important to you, results or approval?”
“When we judge others, we diminish ourselves.”
“Create a Clear objective”
“Act “As If” = a mindset to becoming the thing you want to be.”
“Say “Yes and…”= Don’t just raise questions and obstacles, but build on ideas and concepts.”
“When talking with someone or presenting, be present. Don’t manufacture emotion, respond with how you feel whether that is happiness, sadness, anger, or something else.”
“The expert doesn’t always know that much more than the novice. The expert is often perceived as an expert simply because their information is better organized.”
