We recently had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Wilson for Leap Magazine. For those who do not know, Leap is the Alberta Cancer Foundation magazine. Wilson’s story is amazing and we felt honoured to get the chance to photograph him for this magazine. The greatest part of our job is getting to meet amazing people like Wilson and create something together.
For this shoot Leap magazine wanted us to photograph Wilson and his long time girlfriend outside. It worked out well as there was a beautiful river flowing not far from where Wilson lived. We spent time playing with his two dogs, climbing on trees and even wading out into the river with all of our lighting gear. Even though Wilson had just lost his keys and wallet rafting down that river the day before he didn’t hesitate to jump in for the sake of the shot.
The Nitty Gritty Gear Talk
The sun was low in the sky as it was approaching sunset. For the cover shot we used the sunlight as a rim light on the side of Wilson’s Face and then used a gridded octabox on Camera left to fill in the shadows on his face. It was shot at F 4.0 to keep Wilson in focus but allow the background to fall out of focus bringing the attention to Wilson.
Thanks again to Leap magazine for allowing us the freedom to create such a fun shoot and most importantly, Thank you to Wilson for sharing his story. It was an honour to have the privilege to photograph you.
