Hello 2014!

Welcome to 2014!  This post might seem a little bit late, but I’m going to do it anyway. You know why?  Because it’s never too late to re-organize yourself or your business.  I always love the new year as it is a chance to reflect on the past year.  It’s also a chance to go through and find out what worked and what needs to be improved.  Below you will find our top 4 ideas for organizing yourself in 2014.  best of all, if you implement all 4, the most you will possible spend is the cost of a notebook and pen! If that sounds good to you read on.

Bullet Journaling

This is the organizational tool that I am most excited about implementing for 2014.  Ryder Carroll has developed a system of journaling and task lists that is revolutionary.  All you need for this is a notebook and a pen.  I could never explain as well as he can, so I will just link you to a video describing the process.  If after the two minute video you are still interested make sure to head over to his website HERE.  This will provide a much more thorough look at Bullet Journaling.

File Archiving

We implemented this file naming structure last year and it still seems to do the job for us.  If you are looking for a new way to name your files now is the time to try something new. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to implement simple File naming systems in order to locate all of the images you capture in this modern world.  The last thing you want is for that once in a lifetime image of uncle bob fly fishing in his underwear to go missing because of poor file naming. Think about it.

Below is how we choose to name our files.

1)  Start by separating your images by years.  This way when you fill a hardrive you can put a piece of tape on it and clearly see what years it contains by simple opening up the hardrive on your computer.

This is what works for us, you can order these important facts in any order you like best.Screen shot 2014-01-13 at 10.40.16 PM

4) After that we create high-res, Psd, Raw, and web folders to organize the images and export them to the appropriate folder. The Pixieset cover photo will be described below.

We have experimented with a number of different methods for sending files to clients.  Right now we are using Pixieset.  It allows us the ability to personalize each client page.  It also allows clients to download all of the images with one click of the mouse.  Best part of all is that it is FREE!

Here is an Example of a personalized cover we used for the Met Agency.

Accounting isn’t fun.  At least WAVE looks good.  It also easily connects to your bank account to allow you to easily keep track of all of your expenses and income.  The invoicing is fully customizable making it easy to send out professional looking estimates and invoices to put you ahead of the game.

*  I would like to state that we were not payed to support any company listed above.  Not saying we are above a healthy bribe, just merely stating it didn’t happen… yet. All of the views above are sadly our own.

This concludes the organizational tools of 2014.  Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom.  We hope you have found at least one way to improve your organization for this year.
