Ballet Edmonton

We had the complete honour of getting to collaborate with the amazing team at Ballet Edmonton a few months ago. These images are now out in the world and we are so happy to be able to share them.

This shoot was a true collaboration between the dancers, the amazing choreographer, Wen Wei, and us. For our process, we wanted soft light that would allow the dancers to move through the space freely and allow them the ability to not have to worry about hitting exact marks. We have recently been using a combination of two lights, side by side, with soft lighters on each to create a larger source. For this shoot we used that same theory, but instead of having the lights beside each other–we stacked them vertically. This helped accentuate their bodies, while also keeping a nice key light on their faces when they looked up. We also used a kicker light on camera left, and two lights to softly light the background.

Post work on this project was minimal. We had shot the background to be off white and then in post we added a slight blue tint to the colour. From there we removed any scraps or bruises on the dancers, and voila.

Our favourite jobs are always the jobs that allow us to really collaborate with other talented people. Dancers have so much control over their bodies and an understanding of what looks good that it is amazing to watch what they come up. We hope you enjoy!
