University Hospital Foundation

2020 was a year to re-appreciate just how vital our health care systems are and to highlight the people behind it who are saving lives every day.

We’ve worked with the University of Alberta’s Hospital Foundation in the past and when they reached out to us about doing portraits for their website overhaul we were excited to create a heroic look that would serve the foundation well and honour the people featured. Besides health workers, the 4 days of shoots also featured patients and donors. In total over 70 final images were delivered for use across the website and other various marketing collateral.

Check out www.givetouhf.ca for the website experience. You can view a handful of our favourites below, followed by some further details on the gear and challenges we had to contend with in this shoot.

Challenges:

Besides just general safety requirements to do this photoshoot within a pandemic, we also had to contend with extremely limited availability to any areas of the hospital. One of the few locations scouted was an under construction common space that would be out of the way of the Kaye Clinic. In developing the creative, we determined a semi-studio look. Utilizing colours on practical walls (nice metal and concrete texture) in the area we photographed at for two days. We reflected similar colours and lighting in our studio for the remaining individuals that for scheduling reasons or access could not come on location. The brand colours helped to unify the variety, and we changed our lighting setup about every 2-3 people so that it didn’t get too repetitive no matter how many images they were using in marketing situations. UHF also brought on additional partners to capture video of the same setup as our photos so we utilized continuous lighting for all of the setups so that they could quickly utilize the individuals and match the look of the portraits seamlessly.
